Small-Scale Composting

SACS and WMS

Sustainable Agriculture in Communities Society and Waste Management Society have established a partnership to increase awareness of composting and composting techniques.

Goal:

Create a high-efficiency, low tech composting system which functions as a demonstration site for workshops with students, faculty, and the surrounding community.

Objectives:

  • Provide members of SACS and WMS with basic and advanced composting knowledge.
  • Produce as much high-quality compost as possible for use in the campus garden.
  • Create lasting relationships between SACS and WMS.

Methods:

  1. Establish a SACS liaison for composting.
  2. Spend a work-day re-vamping the compost bins, collecting carbon materials, and building a rickshaw for transfer of food waste from DeBot. (SACS and WMS)
  3. Establish maintenance schedules in a way that allows anyone and everyone interested in getting their hands dirty compost time.
  4. Begin a log book. All data (time of turning, who performed, what materials were added...) should be recorded.
  5. Compost piles will be built and turned weekly (more if schedules allow).
  6. After the fifth week (longer in winter) finished compost will be screened and stored appropriately.

Possibilities:

  • Winter composting in the hoophouse
  • Cold frames, hot frames, and solar hot frames
  • Campus Compost Commission
  • Fund-raiser workshops
  • Research opportunities
